Listening to Resco Radio this morning about 20 past 7 - heard and recorded some of the live transmission of WFD during this Woodbine Street Fire. Check it out. Here's the article - click the link below to listen to what the firefighters were doing at the time....

WORCESTER— An early-morning blaze at a three-decker on Woodbine Street displaced 11 people, some of whom weren’t aware of the flames engulfing the third-floor apartment above them until firefighters dashed up the front steps, officials and residents said.

Roused by the strong smell of smoke or other residents banging on their doors, all the occupants of the three-unit home near Clark University had fled into the dawn chill wrapped in blankets by the time the flames invaded the attic and then erupted through the roof, residents said. The fire broke out shortly before 7 this morning.

Sixteen-year-old Karina Altreche was awoken by her mother to find their home filling with a strong odor of smoke. At first they thought it might be coming from a shorted-out lamp or some other minor problem, she said.

“When I got outside and saw the fire, I cried,” Miss Altreche said standing outside the gutted building in her pajamas. “I’ve never been through anything like this before. I have nothing now. I don’t have a place to live.”

In the confusion of fire trucks pulling up to find flames shooting up through the roof just after 7 a.m. as bleary-eyed residents spilled out into the street, it wasn’t clear at the time that everybody was out safely, said District Chief Clifton J. DeCourcy.

“Our companies immediately went into a rescue and extinguish operation,” District Chief DeCourcy said at the scene. “It was a very tough fire. Up in the attic there were floor boards that made it hard to pull up the ceilings to get at the fire on the third floor.”

Nineteen-year-old Daniel H. Petit said he was asleep in his first-floor bedroom when he was awoken by his foster mother banging on his door.

“I came out of my room, and I see all these firefighters. They came running up to our door saying your house is on fire,” Mr. Petit said. “I looked up and there was smoke all over the place and fire coming out of the roof.”

Residents said a man who lives on the third floor wasn’t home at the time of the fire.

As firefighters battled the blaze and thick black smoke filling the attic, Mr. Petit stood shivering and barefoot on the street in only his basketball shorts. A Red Cross assistance team arrived later and gave him a sweat suit and some socks. Once he found out everybody made it out of the building unharmed, his thoughts turned to the $600 computer he recently bought.

“I’m glad everybody got out. That’s a good thing. But now I’m worried about all my stuff,” Mr. Petit said.

The third-floor and attic suffered extensive fire damage, while the rest of the large three-decker had water, smoke and some fire damage, District Chief DeCourcy said. One firefighter was treated for a back injury, he said.

Gladys Ibezim, who residents said lived in the first-floor apartment, bought the house just over a year ago, according to county real estate records. The three-decker was valued at $303,500, according to city records.

The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation, but residents and the district chief said it appeared to begin on the third floor in the rear of the building.

“There was a lot of fire right from the get-go,” District Chief DeCourcy said. “It was tough, tough fire.”

Ok a couple of blogworthy items have surfaced, so here goes. #1 - the HTC TyTN II, AKA "Kaiser" has been released. You can read all about it at www.htc.com or www.modaco.com. This is the phone I MUST have....question is, how long can I wait for the price to come down?? (Yikes - 750.00 beans) But it certainly is sweet. I haven't had alot of posting lately, mostly in part to being extremely busy contemplating the meaning of life and pursuing self-actualization. No, seriously, just not alot of geek time lately - much to my dismay. New news: I am in the market for a new phone. I am sitting here at AM-B-CARE browsing the new unlocked HTC phones, and doing some myspacing. On a positive note, I will be starting a new job in Providence on Jun 25th, and I'm really looking forward to it. Mon thru Fri no weekends no holidays, and, best of all, DAYS! New Vegas Projects

I've received the new Sony Vegas 7.0, and have been messing around with some new projects. I'm an going to try and start working on some integrated video and still combinations, hopefully superimposing animated stills (like the button talkers) over existing video. Here is my break-in project:

The original video was the Harvey Birdman Superfriends episode. I Cut out all the pictures used and erased their backgrounds to leave the alpha open so the existing video background would show through. I then created a second video layer, copied a frame of the space background, then used Fireworks to draw over the space where the existing characters would have appeared. This allowed me to superimpose my PNG pictures without there being any other character pieces in the background. Then just a little composite level tweaking and Panning of the PNG's and voila. Crude, but I think this opens up new possibilities!

Its 8:22am and I'm sitting in my living room. We just got back from the White Mountains on a little mini-vacation, and now I'm here sucking down Barium Sulfate in preparation for my 11am Abdominal CT Scan (yay.) At least its Banana flavored. I have to guzzle 2 bottles of this shit before 10:30.

Anyway, hopefully I have at least 6 months to live. Gotta figure out what causing all this abdominal pain. Keep your fingers crossed.

I recently came across a story about a web-based GPS tracking program (JAVA) called MOLOGOGO that is really cool. Visit www.mologogo.com to sign up for a free account. You create a user name and account on Mologogo. Then, you download the appropriate program for your Motorola, Boost Mobile Pre-paid, Blackberry, or Windows Mobile GPS-enabled phone. Using your data cable (and a program called OpenJAL for the Motorola iPhone series) you install the Java client to your phone. Windows Mobile phones will just use the standard ActiveSync to install the CAB file.

Goto MOLOGOGO.com and read up on it. I used it on my trip up to NH and it plotted the whole thing. It was pretty cool. Best of all, its my favorite --->Free. All you need is a compatible phone and a data plan for it (I am using the $30.00 Boost Mobile i415 model, and the data plan is like 30 cents a day. The phone came with $10.00 already installed from Target! So I'll be good for over a month without paying anything!)

This has great possibilities for tracking friends, kids, or anyone else. Anywhere you drop this phone can be tracked online, along with the last 100 locations. Give it a read. If you install it, add me as COOCH1000.

Very Cool New Phone

Well some may consider it a little outdated ALREADY (compared to the MDA) , but I've just purchased the T-mobile SDA Smartphone with Windows Mobile 5.0 (Also known as the HTC Tornado). This phone is awesome. The only real difference is the absence of a QWERTY keyboard. But sacrificing this saved me about 100 bucks. Couple of interesting things I'd like to tell you about this phone if you're considering your own upgrade. I would highly recommend it for the following reasons. I've been able to sucessfully install:

Mundu Radio --> Live internet streaming radio, which streams directly to the phone in either GPRS or Wi-Fi connections. Very nice application.

Mundu Speak --> Voice Over IP telephony service. Allows MUNDU users to speak live over their smartphones WITHOUT accumulating minutes on their carriers!!! (SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS ONE...ITS GOING TO BE BIG) I've got it installed and working, now I just need some other people to sign up so I'll have contacts...ITS FREE!!
(Requires installing the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 to the mobile device. The NCF is a free download available at Microsoft's Website. You just install it to the storage Card on the Smartphone and its good to go)

MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, Internet Explorer. MMS, SMS messaging. Full Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Fully syncable to PC for contacts, Outlook, etc. Games. Camera and Camcorder (with alot of settings and features!). Podcasting. Streaming TV and other Media. Windows Media Player. MP3's. Fully editable Ringtones (add any WAV or MP3 to the devices and assign as a ringtome)

Can integrate ALL of your current email accounts to the device.

Really, theres not much this phone can't do. For $80 bucks a month, you'll get full equipment protection, 600 anytime minutes, free nights and weekends, 400 text/MMS messages per month, and unlimited data and internet browsing (This includes free access at ANY of T-mobiles Hotspots (Starbucks, ETC!)

Oh, did I mention that I've also discovered a way to link the Phone to my laptop via USB cable and have the phone function as a wireless modem??? Its awesome. Just disable the activeSync connection in the phone settings, Run the HTC USB Modem program, have the laptop dial internet2.voicestream.com, and there you go! I was able to get online ANYWHERE I had a phone signal. The connection was fast enough for me to stream radio from WWW.XMRADIO.COM. So thats pretty damn good. Now you'll be able to get online with your laptop and not be dependent on a WiFI singnal.

Here's a little cartoon clip from the famous scene in Office Space where Milton defends his right to listen to the radio. Even though the mouth movements arise out of only 3 shapes, this is my most lengthy lip-sync to date. I'm also going to start trying to pan and zoom/switch scenes as in this clip to add some feeling. The vectors were created using 2 bitmaps from the web.

This is my first production after a lip-syncing exercise. I took TJ's photo and converted it to a vector, then blended out the mouth. I then added his GRAPHIC symbol to the timeline across about 25 frames (keyframes at 1 and 25). I then edited that graphic symbol and created 3 more layers within it, AUDIO, LIPSYNC, and MOUTH MOVEMENTS. In the MOUTH MOVEMENTS layer, I pasted each of the 12 lip positions into frames. Once done, I converted this layer to a GUIDE layer. I then imported the Crikey! Audio clip into position. Scrubbing the timeline, I copied and pasted the appropriate mouth positions from the GUIDE layer into the corresponding frame in the LIPSYNC layer. Once lined up and testing properly, I simply deleted the audio and guide layers, leaving only the graphic head and the LIPSYNC frames. Back on the main timeline, I then imported the audio layer once again. The result is a smooth lipsync which can be scaled and moved without dragging all the different mouth positions around with the head graphic. Apparently, the most important step in this procedure is making sure that the NON-MOVING aspects (in this instance, TJ's face graphic) are converted to GRAPHIC SYMBOLS, not MOVIE CLIPS. This will come in handy when I develop the characters for the strip. I promised TJ and Brian I would make them characters, so we're making progress.

I Need Storyline Ideas!

On top of the animated Jpegs, I am also interested in formulating a series of cartoon shorts. This will be the biggest project to date, and I expect it will take some serious planning to come out right, over maybe the next year or so. Here's the jist of it. The Cartoon will be called Dumpst'r Donuts (spoofing Dunkin Donuts, including similarly colored logo, etc) - It will be a series of cartoon shorts depicting a large dumpster, with the window on the side serving as the "drive-thru", a can-and-string apparatus for the drive-up mic/speaker. Customers (I would like to create regularly appearing characters, and keep it under 15 for drawing sake) will drive up and place orders. I need a second series of characters to represent the employees. Now, there will be a discriminatory bias toward European and Middle Eastern personnel. I would like to develop at least 3 female employees and 1 or 2 males. The backgrounds and angles will be fairly simple, because once created they can be repeated, as the story will be at the same location all the time. I am considering using the Grafton Street Citgo/Dunkin Donuts as the model, for this is where the bulk of my former DD anxieties over screwed up orders, poor customer service, and shitty coffee originated. So I plan to head down there over the next few weeks and obtain lots of outside and inside Camcorder footage at as many different angles as I can to build the "set" in FLASH. I can convert still shots obtained from the recordings into vectors which will allow me to scale them nicely for the strip. I was also thinking about getting some actual sound recordings also of background noise in the line at some of the busiest hours to add realism to the finished product. So, I need some ideas. Particularly for the character's names. Also I'll be accepting ideas for conversations between the window staff and the customer. Submit some ideas for personality traits of the customers and employees. Once I have some good preliminary suggestions, I can get busy drawing out the characters. In the meantime, I will be busy building the backgrounds, etc. Email Cooch1000@hotmail.com.

I want to try and start using some more complicated Alpha Channel pics for backgrounds/etc. Below the Movie is a screenshot of the Macromedia FLASH .Fla file for this Clip - Theres a lot going on! This is, of course, nothing compared to most other experienced Flanimator's work, but I'm doing these stupid little projects to get more used to the Flash Workspace. I keep reading, and learning, and trying to apply new techniques daily. I'm getting some ActionScript training online now....so lets see if I can get even whackier with the content. Anyone interested in Flash can contact me for information and tutorials on how to use the powerful Flash MX2004 Professional. I have been using Macromedia Flash, Fireworks, GifAnimator and Vegas to create the bulk of my content. I got away from Flash for a little while because cross-posting was difficult, but this has been corrected. I've learned some new techniques for morphing and creating dynamic movable pictures which can be posted on MySpace, etc at remarkably small file sizes (ShockWave Flash, or SWF is a great format to save space.)
As an example, here is a SWF which I have archived on Blip.TV which is only 664 kb, but hosts alot of content. Notice that you can also Right Click to Zoom, without loss of quality thanks to Flash's Vector Based Graphics. Both these sizes are the same file size when hosted. Cool eh?

Burning Down the House

So here is a blogworthy note of interest. Woke up this morning and dropped my girl off at the train station and came back to the apartment. Sat on the couch to lounge until about 9am. I was on the couch and I started hearing this repetitive beep that I couldn't determine the origin of. Finally, after about 6 minutes, I went out into the front porch and saw that the smoke alarms were sounding. I sniffed around and didn't smell any smoke, didn't see any smoke or commotion. I call the landlord to tell him the stupid things are going off - and he says maybe the battery backups have failed and need to be replaced. So I climb up on a chair to replace the batteries when this cruiser shows up out front and frantically runs toward my apartment. I yelled to him, "No problem man! I think its just a bad battery!" He yells, "Get out of the house! Everyone out of the house!" as he points to the apartment adjacent to mine. The shit was a blazing inferno! So I scramble to grab my cat and she wants nothing to do with getting out of here in a hurry and when I get her she thrashes me damn near to death. I finally get her and the guinea pigs and bail for the door. I thought all was lost for sure. The Fire Dept gets here about a minute later and starts going to work on the fire, which is now shooting flames and smoke out the kitchen windows. Fortunately, they got it under control before it burnt the whole place down, and none of my stuff was damaged. But a pretty close friggin call!! Here's a little video of the kitchen that was burned in the next door apartment. You just never know how your weekend is going to start!
